In a way, I need a change
From this burnout scene
Another time, another town
Another everything
But it's always back to you

I didn't see the faith coming, I couldn't feel it, sense it, know it. I will never know why.

I walked close to his feet. Following him down the cement drive way, he told me we were going for a ride. Prancing down the drive way I stood at his car awaiting the opening of the door. My tags jingling and I ran. sitting in the front seat, not noticing the strange look on his face. Something was wrong, but being to excited for the ride I didn't take notice, notice that I would soon end up like the others.

Stumble out, in the night
From the pouring rain
Made the block, sat and thought
There's more I need
It's always back to you

But I'm good without ya
Yeah, I'm good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Pulling into the ever so familiar parking lot my tail thumped as I glanced at my master, looking for the big smile on his face, the gleam of his white fangs. But what I thought was upon his face was not there but rather a frown, a stern face. My tail stopping and glancing out the window to see a dog tied to a pole, no master there for him, no love, no affection, nothing to love.

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I'm shattered
I always turn the car around

I always wondered about these dogs, I wondered why were they in depression, and where was their love in life. What did they wake up every morning to? A life of hate and depression? How can you survive in such a harsh world? But for all I knew I was going to find out all the answers to my questions. My black nose pressed up against the glance watching the dog.

I had no idea that the night
Would take so darn long
Took it out, on the street
While the rain still falls
Push me back to you

But I'm good without ya
Yeah, I'm good without you
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Looking back at him he grabbed my leash, hopping, following him out the door. We walked side by side to a gate, the gate leading to the large fenced area containing the dog park. Fog was settled across the area, the day was early, birds were singing as he unhooked my leash and threw the Frisbee. I ran catching it perfectly in the air. Bringing it balck, a big goofy smile on my face.

How many times can I break till I shatter?
Over the line can't define what I'm after
I always turn the car around
Give me a break let me make my own pattern
All that it takes is some time but I'm shattered
I always turn the car around

This went on for a few hours, and the fog soon melting away revealing the start of a hot day. You tongue lolling out of your mouth as you glanced up at him. Walking out of the park, as if life could go on forever, walking to the side of the park, where hills rolled, and fields grew, and no boundaries were made. Slipping your collar of your neck he threw the frisbee far, you ran after it chasing it far, catching it, and running back to return to nobody.

Give it up, give it up, baby
Give it up, give it up, now
Now

Nobody to love, nothing left in your life. You stood in the grass looking for him hiding, to hear your name called. But nothing seemed to change. You sat waiting for days. No food. No water. No love.
Your a stray now, nothing can change.
This is it.

How are you going to live life?
Are you going to find love?
Can your Survive?
What pack will you join?
What mark will you leave?

Will you make your own pattern?

You adventure starts Now.

 Kelpies
« Result #5 on Feb 15, 2008, 1:58pm »

The kelpie is a supernatural shape-shifting water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. It generally has grayish black fur, and will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. its skin is like that of a seal but is deathly cold to the touch. In Orkney a similar creature was called the Nuggle, and in Shetland a similar creature was called the Shoopiltee, the Njogel, or the Tangi. It also appears in Scandinavian folklore where in Sweden it is known by the name Bäckahästen, the brook horse. In Norway it is called nøkken, where the horse shape is often used, but is not its true form. In Iceland it is called Nykur or Nennir. Another similar Scottish water horse is the Each uisge.

In Scottish folklore, a kelpie would lure people onto its back and then dive into a deep lake to drown its unfortunate rider. A kelpie if bridled by a human might be forced to do the bidding of the rider but if the bridle should slip then the unfortunate soul would find themselves in a watery grave.

The kelpie sometimes appeared as a rough hairy man who would grip and crush travellers, but it most commonly took the form of a beautiful tame horse standing by a stream or river. If anyone mounted it, it would charge into the deepest part of the water, submerging and taking the rider with it. They would sometimes interbreed with humans' horses, and the foals were said to be fine fleetfooted horses. The kelpie was also said to warn of forthcoming storms by wailing and howling. Rarely, kelpies could be benign. The folktale The Kelpie's Wife tells of one in Loch Garve, Ross-shire, who had a human wife. The Jethro Tull song Kelpie, from the 1988 album 20 Years Of Jethro Tull, tells of a young woman tempted away by a kelpie.

 Mermaids
« Result #6 on Feb 15, 2008, 1:55pm »

A mermaid (from the Middle English mere in the obsolete sense 'sea' (as in maritime, the Latin mare, "sea") + maid(en)) is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman; gender-neutral plurals could be merpeople or merfolk. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures.

Much like sirens, mermaids in stories would sometimes sing to sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or cause shipwrecks. Other stories would have them squeeze the life out of drowning men while trying to rescue them. They are also said to take them down to their underwater kingdoms. In Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid it is said that they forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite.

The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaid-like; in fact, some languages use the same word for both creatures. Other related types of mythical or legendary creature are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies, animals that can transform themselves from seals to humans.

Prior to the mid 19th century, mariners referred to Manatee and Dugongs as mermaids.

Legends of these half-human, half-fish humanoids have circulated for millennia, even as far back as 5000 BC. It has been widely suggested or implied that manatees or dugongs could be behind the myth of the mermaid. An example supporting this theory would be that Christopher Columbus had logged that he had seen mermaids on his journey to the new world, but thought they would be more attractive. These large aquatic mammals are notable for the way in which they carry their young, cradled in their arms much as a human would carry a baby. It is possible that sailors seeing these unfamiliar beasts for the first time, would assume that they had in fact stumbled across some sort of humanoid species, and consequently spread their accounts of the sightings through their homelands on their return from voyages. It has even been posited that the traditional image of a mermaid with long flowing hair could be attributed to manatees breaking the ocean surface underneath patches of seaweed, and giving the unfamiliar observer the impression of having long hair. Sightings from first-hand witnesses generally describe mermaids who do not talk and have green or black hair. The stereotypical "pretty" mermaid usually has long, flowing golden hair.

 Griffins
« Result #7 on Feb 15, 2008, 1:51pm »

The griffin, griffon or gryphon(from Old French grifon) is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. More similar to the creature would be the gyrfalcon, a large falcon of the north, which may account for the name 'gryphon' as a cross between 'gyrfalcon' and 'lion'. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine.

Most contemporary illustrations give the griffin the forelegs of an eagle, with an eagle's legs and talons, although in some older illustrations it has a lion's forelimbs; it generally has a lion's hindquarters, however. Its eagle's head is conventionally given prominent ears; these are sometimes described as the lion's ears, but are often elongated (more like a horse's), and are sometimes feathered. Some writers describe the tail as a serpent, in the manner of a chimera.

Infrequently, a griffin is portrayed without wings (or a wingless eagle-headed lion is identified as a griffin); in 15th-century and later heraldry such a beast may be called a male griffin, an alce or a keythong. In heraldry, a griffin always has aquiline forelimbs; the beast with leonine forelimbs is distinguished as the opinicus.

A 9th-century Irish writer by the name of Stephen Scotus asserted that griffins were strictly monogamous. Not only did they mate for life, but if one partner died, the other would continue throughout the rest of its life alone, never to search for a new mate. The griffin was thus made an emblem of the Church's views on remarriage.

Being a union of a terrestrial beast and an aerial bird, it was seen in Christianity to be a symbol of Jesus Christ, who was both human and divine. As such it can be found sculpted on churches.

The egg-laying habits of the female were first clearly described by St. Hildegard of Bingen, a German nun author of the 12th century. She outlined how the expectant mother would search out a cave with a very narrow entrance but plenty of room inside, sheltered from the elements. Here she would lay her three eggs (about the size of ostrich eggs), and stand guard over them.

Griffin bas-relief, from Picardy, ca 1260 (Musée de Picardie, Amiens)According to Stephen Friar, a griffin's claw was believed to have medicinal properties and one of its feathers could restore sight to the blind. Goblets fashioned from griffin claws (actually antelope horns) and griffin eggs (actually ostrich eggs) were highly prized in medieval European courts.

By the 12th century the appearance of the griffin was substantially fixed: "All its bodily members are like a lion's, but its wings and mask are like an eagle's." However, it is not yet clear if its forelimbs are the legs an eagle's or a lion's; although the description implies the latter, the accompanying illustration is ambiguous. It was left to the heralds to clarify that.

Male griffin, alce or keythong

Parker says, of the griffin, "It may be represented as without wings, and then with rays or spikes of gold proceeding from several parts of its body. Sometimes it has two long straight horns. The term Alce is given, as if used by writers for a kind of griffin, but no example can be quoted."

But the term alce is rare in modern heraldry reference books; this wingless, spiked variant is almost invariably called the male griffin - although this must be a very unusual case of dimorphism because, as Stephen Friar puts it, "both creatures possess the usual male attributes".

The male griffin itself is quite rare. It occurs as the dexter supporter (to the right of the bearer of the shield/ to the left of the viewer) in the arms of St. Leger entered at the visitation of Devon and Cornwall 1531 (College of Arms G 2, folio 24v) and as the supporter of the banner of a mid-16th-century Knight of the Garter in College of Arms Vincent 152 (pp 107-8). In the late 19th century, Sir Henry William Dashwood was granted supporters: two male griffins Argent [white] gorged with a collar flory counter flory. One was also recently granted as a crest in the arms of the City of Melfort, Saskatchewan (image).

The term keythong is rarer still. The definitive instance comes from James Planché, who notes, under the badge of the Earl of Ormonde (first creation) as recorded in a College of Arms manuscript from the reign of Edward IV, the single contemporary reference: "A pair of keythongs." Planche's footnote: "The word is certainly so written, and I have never seen it elsewhere. The figure resembles the Male Griffin, which has no wings, but rays or spikes of gold proceeding from several parts of his body, and sometimes with two long straight horns. Vade Parker's Glossary, under Griffin."

At the end of the 20th century the term keythong began to be taken up enthusiastically among adherents of heraldry - at least, among members of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

 Harpies
« Result #8 on Feb 15, 2008, 1:43pm »

in Greek mythology, the Harpies ("snatchers"[1]) were mainly winged death-spirits (Harrison 1903, p 176ff), best known for constantly stealing all food from Phineas. The literal meaning of the word seems to be "that which grabs" as it comes from the ancient Greek word αρπάξ which means to grab.

The Harpy could also bring life. A Harpy was the mother by the West Wind Zephyros of the horses of Achilles (Iliad xvi. 160). In this context Jane Harrison adduced the notion in Virgil's Georgics that mares became gravid by the wind alone, marvelous to say (iii.274).

Though Hesiod (Theogony) calls them two "lovely-haired" creatures, Harpies as beautiful winged bird-women are a late development, in parallel with the transformation of the "Siren, a creature malign though seductive in Homer, but gradually softened by the Athenian imagination into a sorrowful death angel" (Harrison p 177). On a vase in the Berlin Museum, a harpy has a small figure of a hero in each claw, but her head is recognizably a Gorgon, with goggling eyes, protruding tongue and fangs.

Harpies were sisters of Iris, daughters of Typhon and Echidna.

Phineas, a king of Thrace, had the gift of prophecy. Zeus, angry that Phineas revealed too much, punished him by putting him on an island with a buffet of food which he could never eat. The Harpies always arrived and stole the food out of his hands right before he could satisfy his hunger, and befouled the remains. This continued until the arrival of Jason and the Argonauts. The Boreads, sons of Boreas, the North Wind, who also could fly, succeeded in driving the Harpies and killing one of them, as a request from Iris, who promised that Phineas would not be bothered by the Harpies again, and "the dogs of great Zeus" returned to their "cave in Minoan Crete". Thankful for their help, Phineas told the Argonauts how to pass the Symplegades. (Argonautica, book II; Ovid XIII, 710; Virgil III, 211, 245).

In this form they were agents of punishment who abducted people and tortured them on their way to Tartarus. They were vicious, cruel and violent. They lived on Strophades. They were usually seen as the personifications of the destructive nature of wind. The Harpies in this tradition, now thought of as three sisters instead of the original two, were: Aello ("storm swift"), Celaeno ("the dark") — also known as Podarge ("fleet-foot") — and Ocypete ("the swift wing").

Aeneas encountered Harpies on the Strophades as they repeatedly made off with the feast the Trojans were setting. Celaeno cursed them, saying the Trojans will be so hungry they will eat their tables before they reach the end of their journey. The Trojans fled in fear.

Harpies in the infernal wood, from Inferno XIII, by Gustave Doré, 1861Harpies remained vivid in the Middle Ages. In his Inferno, XIII, Dante envisages the tortured wood infested with harpies, where the suicides have their punishment in the second ring:

Here the repellent Harpies make their nests,

Who drove the Trojans from the Strophades
With dire announcements of the coming woe.
They have broad wings, a human neck and face,

Clawed feet and swollen, feathered bellies; they caw
Their lamentations in the eerie trees.

 Noble's Chessboard
« Result #10 on Feb 14, 2008, 10:30pm »

In a world plagued with chronic betrayal, only a few key players achieved high rank. Generally they were born into it, cursed from birth with the gifts of seductive, persuasive tongues and easy access to power. They were trained from the time that they could first comprehend society that to rule should be everyone's ultimate goal, a dream for which no price was too great. And thus Blythe landed herself on the Seelie throne.
Blythe was a classic elf; tall, graceful, with moon-pale unmarred skin and delicate features. She had striking, violet eyes that gazed through people and always seemed to be watching something, and floor-length brown hair. Her gorgeous, polished appearance befitted the Seelie court, though it had played a minor role in her ascension to the throne.
The Seelie court was one of superficial beauty and a rotten core which people spent their entire life navigating around. Masked by the strong silk of attraction, sweet words and bright lights lay the same deadly traps that cliched all the vibrant fey courts. If anything, their subtle nature only made the dangers more perilous.
It was a innate understanding of these political webs that had permitted Blythe to rise to her current throne. Her family had held a network of allies, and as her rivals had systematically had unfortunate accidents the ruthless fey had won these allies' hearts and minds, for the time being.
Currently the court was in relative peace, which was to say that it was a seething mass of torn schemes and blooming plots. Blythe ruled supreme in the midst of this woven chaos, as she had for the past human century.
Despite her short period of time ruling the court, Blythe had successfully maintained the semblance of peace that the Seelie fey delighted in. Sacrifices had been made, of course; fey had been abandoned, killed, or traded away, but lives were a small price to pay.
The vicious queen thought about all of this as she looked over the throne room from her high, elegant chair. Blythe sat straight in her seat, in a manner befitting of her high status, long hair carefully coiled into exquisite ringlets cascading off the chair's arms. Her torso was encased in a lilac corset, matching the violet eyes that were in constant motion. Beneath the corset a shining white silk gown lay in rustling folds around her.
A delicate hand reached up, waving away a confused looking petitioner. "Speak with my chamberlain, please. Does anyone else require a audience?" her voice was bell-clear, both a invitation and warning.
